A GIG AT LAST!!!

Profunksticated landed work here in the D.C. area.

It involves proposal work for a firm in Northern Virginia that in part contracts with states to administer programs like Medicaid. (I referred to this job in my Tuesday post.) I’m filling in for someone out on maternity leave. I technically am an employee of the staffing firm that provided me, and it’s to last about three to four months.

I met the hiring manager, a hyper-organized 40-something Indian guy. I think I’ll like working for him. And there are quite a few African Americans in this office, which on the surface will appear to add to my comfort level.

So I did in three weeks here what I couldn’t do in six months at home. I like the fact that this job is short-term, because it will give me a chance to continue to look around for other opportunities.

I start Monday. I pray for the best.

Peace.

  1. Congrats!!!! And you never know. The maternity leave person might not come back.

So true, so true. We will, as they say, see what happens down the road. I had a co-worker at my last gig go out on maternity leave and decide she didn’t want to return to work. Of course, her husband, an engineer, worked in the same office, so I presume her decision was easy.

  2. good luck! i got my foot in the door at another company the exact same way. by the time the
woman returned from maternity leave, another position had opened up that i was able to land
before they even posted an ad. hopefully this will lead to something you hadn’t expected!

Yo, thanks, K, for visiting. I was told today that the gig will go until Feb. 1., but anything can happen between now and then!

  3. Ohhh I KNOW you’re happy! Just in time. I remember a few years back my Hunny landed a contract job because of maternity leave. The lady never ended up coming back and a 4 month gig turned into a 2 year thing.

Thanks, Aly. It’s been a long strange trip. I’m told the gig will end on Feb. 1., but you never know, ‘cause this lady might change her mind and decide not to come back. But this contract job gives me a two-month window to look at other opportunities as well. Hallelujah!

  4. How’s it going at the new gig?

Heartdrops, thanks for visiting. It’s going as well as can be for a temp job. See my latest post, written Dec. 5. Take care.

    Peace.

  5. A seriously belated but serious nevertheless congratulations! It’s always good to see black professionals getting a chance to be black professionals. I hope it works out to be exactly what you want and what you need. Hopefully I’ll be joining the ranks of employed black professionals as well.

    Peace

Thanks for visiting, my brother! Keep the faith. You’ll find something.

It’s funny that I read your comment only minutes after my current supervisor (the sister I refer to in my above post) and I were discussing corporate America and its change over the years.
It used to be an institution that took care of employees and their families for life. Today, it’s “you’re lucky we’re paying you to do this much, and frankly, we’d prefer you don’t stay here more than two years.” I’m sure you’ve been asked this before, but had you considered or have you ever hung out your own shingle? Take care.

    Peace.
