Encouraged
Profunksticated has finished three days at the new gig. It’s been good thus far. On Friday, for example, I moderated two meetings - one a strategy meeting and another a kickoff meeting, both on proposals. Some participated live, others via teleconference. I’m told folks were excited that I was coming on board.
The feeling was heady, actually meeting folk who don’t know of my past blunders and who believe I know what I’m doing. Perhaps I’m finally believing that I know what I’m doing. My boss is a very nice lady who seems to live at the office. I jokingly told her that she could save a lot of money on her rent or mortgage if she just moves into the office.
She said she would, but the company would frown on having her dog live there. Touche’.
My employer is an IT consulting firm that specializes in, among other things, networks and database building. I decided this time I would not only do the administrative proposal stuff, but try to learn what these guys actually do, which I hadn’t done before in six years at the environmental firm.
But there are other things I can do to help my cause. As I opened the first teleconference Friday, a project manager who got on line told me that the earning a Project Management Professional’s certificate was the way to go for a non-techie type who wants to move up in the firm. Hmmm. I’ll need to give that some thought.
As I write this, I’m actually looking forward to going to work. Wow. Now the commute, that’s a whole ‘nuther story — approximately 30 miles one way, from NOVA to Rockville, MD. Never can have it all, can we?
There are a lot of Indian folk in positions of authority at this company, so the culture is different from other places I’ve worked in. An African American lady who runs a help desk contract for the firm met me and told me, “You’re going to love working here.” She was smiling and deadly serious. How often do you hear that? I’m encouraged.
Peace.

Congrats on working things out at the new gig!! I’m glad you like it. There’s nothing like actually wanting to get up and go to work. Make them never want to let you go.
This IS permanent, right?
Yeah, this is permanent. It’s going well thus far. As I write this, this is day4. Thanks.

This is good!! It’s always good when the people who have been there like it enough to predict you’ll like it too!! Get your certificate! Seriously!! I know your commute cucks, but oh well. You could always move to MD!
Thanks, Hostess. I’m considering a move to MD, but some other stuff has to happen first, like making it past the 90-day probation. LOL! And I’m seriously considering the cert as well.

wow.. it sounds like u are in the right environment there…which is more important than the actual job sometimes, to make u wanna jump out off bed after the first alarm, or drag your feet to the shower..
don’t even complain about the commute.. i spend 1.5 hrs commute each way, that is 3 hrs a day. minimum.. depending on the day, it could be worse… but i use the time to catch up on global events… its okay
Shazza, where are you located? You must take the train or subway if you’re able to catch up. Around here, most of us drive. Yes, so far the atmosphere is good.

Well i know in the US everyone drives, so is South Africa where i am originally from. Currently i am in London, the underground is the easiest way to get around this place, because of congestion charges, parking, etc…
but in my case its just horrible, awkward commuting, might be easy and direct to drive, but will be stuck in traffic and i won’t be able to read my paper:)
Shazza, I so want to get to London, if nothing more than to say I’ve been there. I’m 48 years old and I’ve yet to travel outside of North America. I’ve gotten a passport only last year. I don’t blame you one bit for not wanting to drive. Yes, here in the U.S., they say we have a love affair with the car. It’s becoming more of a bad marriage. LOL By the way, as you can see your original comment was recorded here, so I deleted your repeat comment. I don’t know why it appears that this blog eats folks comments.!

you must take the advantage… i have done a few continents including the US…Europe is lovely, i just got back from Geneva again…that is why i came back to London, it’s very central, and 3 hrs by Eurostar u r in Paris, took me just over an hour to fly to Switzerland.
well, i think i commented twice as the first one was waiting for moderator’s approval i suppose.
if u do decide to make it to London, do let me know:)
If I make it over there, I will let you know. Thanks.
